The right installation looks different in Roath than it does in Radyr. In a Victorian terrace in Canton or Cathays, the job is usually a rear bedroom or a loft conversion that bakes all summer, with the outdoor unit tucked on the back wall or a flat roof. On a newer estate in Pontprennau or St Mellons it's often the south-facing landing and bedrooms. A note if you're in a flat or apartment.

Apartments at the Bay and around the city centre can absolutely have air conditioning, but the rules are a little different: flats don't get the same permitted development allowances as houses, and you'll usually need your freeholder's or management company's consent for anything fixed to the outside of the building. We'll tell you honestly at the survey what's possible, and there are neat options where an outside unit isn't allowed. If you rent, your landlord's written permission is the place to start.

Loft conversions and home offices.

Cardiff has thousands of loft conversions, and they're reliably the hottest room in the house: insulated to keep heat in, glazed at the roofline, and impossible to cool with an open window.
